A wonderful opportunity for building industry apprentices
The Scheme has been established to improve and create additional training opportunities for qualifying young Tasmanians, so you can have real, portable building and construction industry skills.
Those skills can be used to build a lasting and fulfilling career in the building and construction industry.
An important benefit is that you often gain valuable work experience from a number of different host trainers that will allow you to experience a range of different working situations and methods on large and small sites.
This will lay a solid foundation for your career within the construction industry.
Training for a career
The Tasmanian Building Group Apprenticeship Scheme has assisted more than 360 apprentices graduate, providing them with solid and secure career paths.
A former apprentice provides the following testimony...
"I wasn't sure what career I wanted to take, I always had an interest in building and construction so I started an apprenticeship with TasBGAS as a carpenter. I was placed with a number of host trainers throughout my training and learnt a lot from each one. I haven't looked back. I now run my own building business and employ apprentices from the Scheme."
How the Scheme operates
Apprentices are available from one week to four years, open ended or fixed term, however a week's notice is required to release the apprentice from an open-ended hire agreement.
It is the Scheme's objective to keep all apprentices and trainees in employment at all times throughout their contract of training. When a host trainer releases an apprentice, the Scheme's role is to secure a suitable placement elsewhere in the trade.
The apprentice and the host trainer complete weekly timesheets. The hours worked are confirmed and the time sheet is then forwarded to the Scheme.
